  5. Committee Previews: The National Security Council

    Moderator : Dahlia Mignouna (dila.mignouna@yale.edu)

    Director : Kevin Hoffman (kevin.hoffman@yale.edu)

Description: The United States’ National Security Council, a select group comprised of some of the highest ranking political and military officials in the US government, has the ability to advise and influence many arms of the executive branch. The advice passed on by this powerful body is taken under very serious consideration from the President.  While the NSC, like all other aspects of the executive branch, falls under the Constitutional checks-and-balances system, the Council essentially has all the powers of said branch at its disposal, and will seek to use these powers to maintain US national security and further its interests around the globe.

Expectations: Although the Council will operate on an open agenda, some of the many topics it may face include nuclear proliferation, the United State’s energy security, the war against drugs in Mexico and elsewhere, terrorism, natural disasters, and the potential for international scandal, heightened by the US’s multiple engagements and involvement around the world.  Delegates, who will be representing the members of the Council, are expected to use their experience, knowledge, and personal areas of proficiency to guide and advise the President in his decisions, in order to protect and further the United States’ security and interests, at home and abroad.

  6. Committee Previews: The Council of Elrond (LOTR)

Moderator : Anne Van Bruggen (anne.vanbruggen@yale.edu)
    Director : Vinicius Lindoso (vinicius.lindoso@yale.edu)
Crisis Director : Ana Del Toro (ana.deltoro@yale.edu)

Description: From the East, we once more witness the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, who—forging an army of orcs, Trolls, and other unspeakable beasts—seeks to overrun Middle Earth, leaving everything that we have struggled to build in ashes.  To add to our despair, there is little hope to unite once more under one sole banner the might of Elves and Men as was common in the ages of old, in the times of the Fall of Gondolin and again in the Fields of Dargolath when Sauron was first destroyed—or so we believed.  While we grew comfortable, the enemy grew stronger.  While we grew arrogant and disunited, the enemy increased his hosts of dangerous allies from South and East.  While we forgot all about the One Ring, which slowly faded from our memories into legend, the enemy not once halted his relentless pursuit for his prized, omnipotent weapon.

It seems that fortune has smiled upon us.  A series of incidents, chance encounters, and sheer luck has delivered to us the one weapon keeping us from complete annihilation by the armies of Mordor.  The One Ring of Power has been brought to Rivendell, and at this moment lies at the disposal of this Council.  Little has been said about the One since the fall of Isildur back in the times when the world was young, and I would be surprised if half of you still remembered much about it.  And yet it encompasses power enough to unseat the Sauron from his dark throne.  Indeed, it is the only weapon at our reach that can do so.  The elven armies are not what they used to be; many Elves have crossed into the land of the Eldar, beyond the Sea, and few that remain would fight for the greed of Men.  To whom will the Free Peoples of Middle Earth turn if not each other?  Around what will you assemble if not the power of the One?  But heed my alert: the One knows no master other than Sauron.  It will obey no one.  As a weapon, it is as lethal to Sauron as it is to anyone other than him who attempts to wield it.  Notwithstanding its evil nature, in our hands it could become the secret weapon we have been waiting to put an end, once and for all, to the pervasive malignancy that so dangerously threatens our freedom and survival.

We are convened on this October 28, Year 3018 of the Third Age of the Middle Earth, in Rivendell, House of Master Elrond, to discuss the evil tidings from the East and plan our confrontation with the enemy.  We have furthermore convened in the Halls of Elrond to share our knowledge on the lore of the Rings of power, and to determine what is to be made of the One—whether as a weapon we will wield against Sauron, or as an evil object we will seek to destroy it.

Our council’s collaborations are most critical, for it is only in brotherhood and unity across all Free Peoples of the Middle Earth that the slimmest chance of victory can be found.
